Color Block Crochet Basket Pattern

This crochet basket pattern works up quickly and creates cute little vessels for storing odds and ends with style. Add in some fun color with a simple and subtle color blocking technique. January is always the time of year that I really overhaul my house – cleaning, de-cluttering, and organizing are huge projects for me this time of the year.

I am still working on sorting and organizing everything, and cute baskets and boxes are an essential part of the whole process. It is easy to make your own little baskets with just a little know-how and my easy crochet basket pattern.

Thick cord and a big hook means these baskets work up super quickly, and adding in a little embroidery thread creates a fun color block look.

I liked the look of just adding color for the last couple of rounds, but feel free to be creative and create your own design!

Supplies needed to make your own crochet basket pattern:

  • Cotton Macrame Cord (1 Spool per basket)
  • Craft or Embroidery Thread (1 Skein for small basket, 2 for large basket)
  • Crochet Hook Size N (10.00 mm)
  • Craft Scissors

Large Crochet Basket Pattern (about 6″ across)

Round 1: Begin with a magic loop, and work 7 sc into the loop, sl st to join (7 sc).

Round 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in same st, 2 sc in each st around (17 sc).

Round 3: Ch 1, sc in same st, 2 sc in next st, * sc, 2 sc, repeat from * around (21 sc).

Round 4: Ch 1, sc in same st, sc in next st, 2 sc in next st, * sc, sc, 2 sc, repeat from * around (28 sc).

Round 5: Ch 1, sc in same st, sc in next st, sc in next st, 2 sc in next st, * sc, sc, sc, 2 sc, repeat from * around (35 sc).

Round 6: Ch 1, working in back loops only (see image below), sc in each stitch around, sl st to join (35 sc).

Crocheting in the back loops only helps to create a nice crisp edge to the bottom of the basket. You can see the edge starting to form in the image below.

Rounds 7-8: Ch 1, sc in each stitch around, sl st to join (35 sc).

For the last two rounds, you will add in the colored craft thread and crochet it together with the macrame cord. Just hold the craft thread together with the macrame cord and crochet as if they were only one piece of yarn or cord. This adds some subtle color to the basket.

Rounds 9-10: Holding craft thread together with macrame cord, ch 1, sc in each stitch around, sl st to join (35 sc).

Finish off. Use hook to weave ends in a bit. Clip off ends. And all done!

The smaller basket pattern is worked in the same way as the large basket with just a few changes.

I am using my new baskets to store/display washi tape and other little supplies in my craft room. They are the perfect size for any little items you want corralled but still close at hand.
